LOTUS MARINA

This marina, designed for the complex systems of the California delta, is made to approach the site its located on in a unique and dynamic way that can adapt to the constant fluctuation of its occupants. The population of this site it particular in that it resides almost entirely on the water (apart from its various supporting system) and it changes in size drastically throughout the seasons; consisting of between thirty occupants to over five hundred depending on the season. The tactic taken with this particular project was to create a system of docks that hold key social programs, and that can connect and tessellate depending on the infrastructure that's needed during the particular season.

The docks resolve themselves in the patterns created in the lotus leaf shape, with is unique in that it can continuously expand around a centralized point. While these "pedals" create the lowest and most flexible level of circulation, the grid of walkways above create a more direct set of paths which can jump from point to point for faster circulation. Above this, on the final level, are the roofs. The purpose of these beyond creating a protected central mass for program like boat mechanic shops and restaurants.

The pattern introduced to the site plan is made up of a lotus shape. The petals geometric ability to aggregate makes it both keep an order to the docks as the grow, as well as to create a memorable pattern from above that reflects how busy with people the marina is at different times in the season. The large roofs that envelope the waters edge can also be seen in these floor plans touching down at different intervals to create boat houses, a viewing platform, and a welcoming area that leads down to the docks.
