BURROW

The idea behind this library in the heart of Oakland, is to create a space that curates the paths of its various occupants so that their daily routes regularly cross each others during their regular circulation in the building.

Within there is a centralized core skylight containing the stacks and stair well. The geometry of this core is made from being pulled or pushed depending on its relationship to the intersecting programs. This core is then encased in a reinforced shell, creating an interstitial space for the reading rooms. The organisation of these layers is determined by deciding which programs then permeate the shell and where.

The library is occupied by both visitors stopping to look at the books, and a working community that inhabits permanent office spaces. By breaking up the the building with distinct spaces for each party, the central core of recources becomes more powerful in acting as the main social condenser.
