WHY ROBOT HOUSE?

	Good question. Robot house is about both taking it back to our roots while reimagining how we live as people. Robot house is about shedding our skin and putting on a new layer.&#38;nbsp;The robot is both a new face to an evolution as well as a direct embodiment of the philosophy of robot house Our homes have an incredible impact on everything around us. They shape our own personal lives, they shape the fabric of our neighborhoods and community, and they

WHAT MAKE A ROBOT HOUSE
&#60;img width="1600" height="1117" width_o="1600" height_o="1117" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9595c5bde6d7eba400386d791a76246d770bd31af9ffb5107aa0e958d9bb148e/2.jpg" data-mid="241005655" border="0" data-scale="98" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9595c5bde6d7eba400386d791a76246d770bd31af9ffb5107aa0e958d9bb148e/2.jpg" /&#62;
WHATS BEING MADE HERE?

	In this scenario, the human acts as the "soul" of the robot in a relationship of symbiosis. The human is responsible for controlling and directing the actions of the robot. This means the robot house must provide some form of interface or control system. A human's thoughts and intentions are part of each home, the human needs for connection, for space, for community, and for privacy are all built in to the robot. Each little detail allowing it to act in accordance with the human's wishes and to give our robot it's missing soul.
In turn, the robot provides the human with enhanced capabilities, allowing them to perform tasks that would otherwise be impossible or extremely difficult. The human benefits from the robot's sensors, which provide information about the environment that the human would not be able to perceive otherwise like the health of the surrounding habitat or the needs or the surrounding community.
	&#60;img width="1117" height="1600" width_o="1117" height_o="1600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/549632aebb17527aa59716febf004b46f7fdbb1e64a16bb117cc01c0c80c6ac2/1.jpg" data-mid="241005654" border="0" data-scale="94" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/549632aebb17527aa59716febf004b46f7fdbb1e64a16bb117cc01c0c80c6ac2/1.jpg" /&#62;
In this relationship, the human is in a way the "brain" of our robot, providing it with direction and purpose, while the robot is the "body," carrying out the human's commands and providing physical support and protection.
Overall, the relationship between the human and the robot will be one of mutual dependence and cooperation, with each entity contributing to the overall functioning of this symbiotic&#38;nbsp;system.</description>

		<description>PORTA CULTUREBy Asa Maas and Kevin Pham&#38;nbsp;
	Our project is an open air facility for quick stop and go pitstop that equips the local community with the resources and education for
proper sanitation. The concept of the design is the layering
of different amenities in a radial plan according to each program and their
varying degrees of interaction. Quick interactions can be
found on the outer layer such as a sanitation station and
bike repairing outpost. The open air urinals are located
within the middle layer while the core houses the toilets and a designated infant care room. The layering of programs
is a solution to minimize foot traffic in the wet rooms and
reduce any unnecessary liquid waste in the composting system.

&#38;nbsp;Through careful consideration of th Embarcadero Plaza, which borders downtown, a commercial corridor, art market, major transportation stop, and is place of refuge for many people experiencing homelessness, this facility provides quick and proper sanitation to ensur the well being of all who pass through. The facilitys low power composting systems and lights means it can operate on solar power provided through pv pannels tiled on the curved roof to maximize daily intake within its locality.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
&#60;img width="1500" height="1500" width_o="1500" height_o="1500" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6cc090fccb04e0e8d555bb74911ea85f0e84be849a94fafeb843fecee4059a2c/map-01.jpg" data-mid="127199417" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6cc090fccb04e0e8d555bb74911ea85f0e84be849a94fafeb843fecee4059a2c/map-01.jpg" /&#62;

By combining the layering of programs with clear and direct paths of travel, people are able to take care of their
needs more efficiently with less physical contact.

The design
also aims to normalize the action of using the restroom
while boosting the public’s trust in the space which they are able to easily navigate and use in a clean and safe manner.
In addition to providing hygienic necessities, the facility
also aims to educate users on the systems employed through
reveals of the inner workings such as waste/water and filtration.&#38;nbsp;

The marking and descriptions of whats coming in and going out of the facility would allow insights to the impact users
have with each use in hopes of reducing excessive waste.

In the heart of mission bay and within the long history of production spaces and work yards, this project brings a timber research center to join the legacy of a robust building community. The goal of this project is to bring the history of the site and the current story of the neighborhood into a productive space that can be utilized for wood research and component manufacturing. Being close to the California College of the Arts campus, as well as in an area rich with other design firms and resources, integrating into the community is a very important piece of this program.

The enclosure system combines a shading structure with the roofs over the primary shop space and openings on the sun-facing side with semi opaque solar cells. These approaches create a gradient of openings that can be seen reflected accross the roofscape with varying degrees of opacities. The louver system that can be seen in elevation, is carried through to enclose the towers, and visually reconnect them with the mass of the building that they have been lifted above. The wooden louvers can be found throughout the ground floor as well, and were chosen for both their shading quality as well as their celebration of the building's materiality. This system is applied to the roofs consistently to create a uniform roof plan, while the elevations independently now reveal a diversity of treatments,with storefronts, louvers, solid walls, and gaps for fresh air, each special treatment teasing out what programs wait inside.&#38;nbsp;

The approach to the site focuses on realizing the shop spaces and supporting rooms as the core of the building to be then treated with public interfacing space at the site corners, with short term, long term, and quarantined housing programs then lifted into towers to float over the primary mass of the building. This organization around the working program then allows for an intentional organization of the shops based on the receiving, processing, researching, and finishing of wood components.&#38;nbsp;

During the walk around the neighborhoods of San Francisco, I began finding a series of buildings that had been squished or pinched together in various ways to sites that seemed too small. I kept finding more of these spaces, and learned a little about how they had come into being from too many people trying to settle on the hill I was walking after the the cities devastating earthquake. I also learned a little about the anomalous squishes that came to be purely out of spite for a neighbor and a bit of space that was allowed for legal building. The tactic while making these collages was mostly an interrogation of the most squished elements I saw. It started with a squished building, and then a look at what on the façade was encouraging this to happen. Was it a door that looked too narrow? Or some gaudy decoration that wouldn’t have fit without being forced? Was it something I hadn’t considered or encountered yet? Each of these questions left me with a different piece of different buildings. When constructed together in this collage, these elements created an embodiment of the squish. Or at least a set of rules I thought were fit enough to be followed again, and that would bring forward elements that made the precedent houses so interesting.

These images below are of the houses I looked at while walking. They were next deconstructed into the collage drawn above.

When designing the lighting approach for this gallery and reading room, the two images below were key precedents in creating the desired lighting effect. On the left, the small box of light that contrasts the outside; and on the right, a gentle layering of light from horizon to the forground.

&#60;img width="10931" height="3643" width_o="10931" height_o="3643" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7fb59293f4f93a6cb3cc48d463a77b400f77f3b27d6fd10579ac7e13621b5713/Inkedinspo_LI.jpg" data-mid="127433823" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7fb59293f4f93a6cb3cc48d463a77b400f77f3b27d6fd10579ac7e13621b5713/Inkedinspo_LI.jpg" /&#62;

	Using soft and earthy materials, the approach in the reading room is to break up the light crossing through the space using perferated walls. The light that is let in is then casted to create a layering effect in the space.

On the west facing wall, the light box idea is brought into the program as a small outcropped lounge area whose entrance is made with only a small gap facing the approach. When entering the room this embodies itself by becoming just a narrow column of light that faces the entrance, a small clue to the well lit space beyond.

	There are perferations in the wall on the south facing side of the room over the computer desks and tables for reading. This wall is treated with a custom pattern proven in light tests to manage accute control over the lighting for those sitting closest to the wall. The hole’s sizes and locations are optomized by running the seating and task locations, along with their lighting requirments through a short grasshopper script. Each hole is then given an angled approach to block the direct light at eye level.

	IRONS HOUSE
	The folding house project is designed in a study of objects as personalities and their ability to be architectural precedants. The space developed is based on characteristics of a found object chosen prior to starting the initial designs. The object choosen for this is a Norelco travel iron. Throughout the various phases of creating this space, the concept was imagined across an array of representations as an iterative ways of understanding the complexity of the objects character and functions.

The iron is choosen for its compact design for traveling. As this, the iron took on the the attitude of someone always on their feet and adapting to quickly changing needs. The room created embodies these attributes in combination with a direct aesthetic influence from the iron.

&#60;img width="5100" height="1871" width_o="5100" height_o="1871" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/89694fa6468416b1cc99f365ae2e1024b8457a684dc0b7455e879934e8f3d9bf/Section-1.jpg" data-mid="111732256" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/89694fa6468416b1cc99f365ae2e1024b8457a684dc0b7455e879934e8f3d9bf/Section-1.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="5100" height="2689" width_o="5100" height_o="2689" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d2737b9ab0310dc8f317967ad8e537ac37a84abd3d38131bcace3502c1ed231f/Floor-Plan.jpg" data-mid="111732258" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d2737b9ab0310dc8f317967ad8e537ac37a84abd3d38131bcace3502c1ed231f/Floor-Plan.jpg" /&#62;

The key operation that has been adopted into this room from the iron is its ability to fold. Being a mobile object that has been designed to be both stored and traveled with, as well as really be used, inspired the space to have a similar mobility. The resulting design explore the ability and extent of a space to fold down into a more manageable forms for some activities, while still being able to deploy onto a functional large space for others.

	BURROW

The idea behind this library in the heart of Oakland, is to create a space that curates the paths of its various occupants so that their daily routes regularly cross each others during their regular circulation in the building.

Within there is a centralized core skylight containing the stacks and stair well. The geometry of this core is made from being pulled or pushed depending on its relationship to the intersecting programs. This core is then encased in a reinforced shell, creating an interstitial space for the reading rooms. The organisation of these layers is determined by deciding which programs then permeate the shell and where.

The focus of this project was in home economics, and alternate forms of housing and or homesteading. The intention behind the building was to create a space that could house a multitude lifestyles into a single large community home. In the images depicted, short term residents are shown in blue and long term residents are shown in red. Usually these two populations are typically considered to require different types of living spaces because of the dichotomy in there homeowner status. But by introducing a housing condition that allows the sharing of some amenities (where tube intersect) and privacy of others (sleeping and dressing), the building can in concept create the the common space for the diverse residents and and de-stigmatize alternative living habits.The resident are then connected to the larger community of Chinatown by a single continuous tube from the ground floor to the top of the building. This space is then opened for any party to host events or classes that can further engage the residents with their community.

	SPATIAL HALFS

Spacial half's made whole in the presence of water. This conceptual project is located on Hunters Point in San Francisco, an area that was once used in world war two as nuclear facilities, and that only slowing been regrowing from the waste it was exposed to. The project started with a series of rough "wet models" which were put under a faucet to see what instances could be created in the model as the water trickled through it. It was from these relationships of wet to dry areas that the concept was born.

	&#60;img width="864" height="432" width_o="864" height_o="432" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a72ec9624b9676d2e5ac9ff42da1b88668de3c060a84a5bf2718ec21d2387929/sectionaction.jpg" data-mid="111734016" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/864/i/a72ec9624b9676d2e5ac9ff42da1b88668de3c060a84a5bf2718ec21d2387929/sectionaction.jpg" /&#62;

The images below shows how when broken down, the structure would consist of layers of gently sloped floors. The sloping and floor change depending on program, and are shaped to catch water falling from above and redirect it according to the program below.

The form of the building is realized in iterations of foam and paper models bored out with a router. The concept behind the project came out of the models being tested with water flowing through the structure to simulate how it would act. Through these experiments came the discovery of water’s ability to divide an open floor plan into smaller more private spaces.

This pavilion, nestled in the dunes of Ocean Beach, San Fransisco, is an exercise in using parametric design to mimic the natural rhythm of a mirage in the sand. The pavilion is conceptualized in compacted dirt, interacting with the seaside climate and, over time, erodingback into the dunes.

A sculptural pavilion designed to expose its decay, and become a temporal representation of passing time.

By imagining the the ripples being broken into a grid of extrusions, setting it up becomes an easier task &#38;nbsp;of arraying components made off-site into guiding framework. Once the pavilion has decayed and is ready to disassemble, it’s only a matter of removing the framework.

Part of the success in the final product of this project is the similar concepts from original sketches that carried through, while also being able to mix with the adapted form factor that was produced out of the scripts made to model it digitally.
